“Get your Badass on with me!”

6/9/2015-The Domestic Badass Spice Line is launching soon and will be featured in the SWAG bags of a celebrity wedding in LA this month! Stay tuned for the opening of our online store! xoxo

12/24/2014-It’s a GIRL! The Domestic Badass and her hubby, The G-Man, welcomed a beautiful baby girl tonight! Mom and baby are doing great!

10/28/2013-Wow, it’s been one crazy summer leading into fall! Good news is that I have another shot at “Cutthroat Kitchen” (I was interviewed for season 2 in September)! If you haven’t already, go check out the webseries on YouTube.com/TheDomesticBadass and show some Badass love 🙂

It’s that time of year again! The holidays are just around the corner and you know you’re gonna throw a party or two. Wanna throw the best party ever? Hire me to do all the cooking! We not only provide ah-mazing food for your guests, but can also do the serving and cleanup too! That leaves you to have more time to actually enjoy your own party! What a concept! Plus we work with any budget, big or small and can even do the decorating too! Call DBA HQ for more info or to schedule a menu consultation. And yes, we also do holiday dinners, too! Call or email for details.

Fall is here and that means fall fruit, more specifically, apples and pears! And with an overabundance of these beauties comes pies, fritters, and fruit butters! I’m working on a new post with the recipe for my fabulous Pear Butter and on Wednesday, I’m working in the test kitchen on some delicious apple recipes to use up some of the 80 something pounds of apples that we picked over the weekend.

The webseries has been on hiatus, due to our hectic schedules, but look for a new episode coming at you soon!  Stay tuned… xoxo

3/6/2013-Had a fun night hosting my very first Twitter/Facebook “Cook-Along”! It was one of those, “hey, this seems like fun!” ideas that hit me in the morning and at 6pm, I was cooking up my Tilapia Piccata. Thanks to everyone who commented, cooked and hung out with us! The response was really great, so we’ll be doing it again, with more notice next time. I’m hoping to do one of these interactive type things every week or two, so stay tuned. I usually post updates to Facebook and Twitter, so follow along there for the latest news and events!

In other exciting news, I got my “official” trademark ownership certificate a couple of days ago! It’s so cool looking and uber official, too-it even has a gold seal! I’ll post a picture soon. xoxo

2/21/2013-It’s OFFICIAL!!!! I am now the proud owner of The Domestic Badass Federally Registered Trademark! Almost 8 months to the day from filing. Whew!  Thanks for all the well wishes and support! Hope you guys liked the Ceviche episode as much as we enjoyed filming it! We’ve been hard at work on a “mini series” of episodes…I don’t want to give too much away, but I think you guys are gonna love it! Stay tuned! And please share with your friends and for the latest updates and Food Porn pics, follow us on Twitter @1domesticbadass and on Facebook facebook.com/thedomesticbadass

Got a Badass recipe, project or tip you’d like to share? Let me know and maybe you’ll see your tip on the site!

Thanks for all the support and love and we look forward to bringing you more Badass! xoxo

1/18/2013-All sorts of cool stuff’s been going on here at DBA HQ! The Gaston Gazette is doing a little story on yours truly that is going to be in the 1/30/13 edition! It was so much fun cooking for Bernie and Ben and sharing a little about my life and love of cooking. I’ll post a link when it’s up!

In other news, I’ve got a birthday coming up next week. Not one of those life-changing-milestone birthdays (thankfully I’ve got a few years before I hit another one of those…yikes…) but another day to celebrate another year of life, love and the pursuit of happiness (and the perfect bite…) 🙂 You know what’s also coming up?…Valentine’s Day!

Surprise your sweetie with an amazing gourmet meal, designed and cooked by The Domestic Badass! I’m still taking reservations for Valentine’s week, so give me a shout. Imagine…not having to make reservations or wait for hours for a table, only to find that the romantic atmosphere you were going for is sidelined by loud conversations, crying babies, over the top marriage proposals and untimely breakups (yes, I’ve actually been in restaurants for all of the above on Valentine’s Days’ past…) Imagine…just you, your sweetie and an amazing gourmet meal that’s personalized and prepared just for you with no clean up! More time for, ahem, dessert….For more information or to make a reservation, just shoot me an email with your contact information, dietary restrictions and preferences and preferred date and time (along with a second choice of date and time) and I’ll get back to you promptly!

Have a great weekend and stay warm! Brrrrrr!!!!

1/1/2013-Happy New Year! Here’s hoping that 2013 will be a great year for us all! xoxox

12/23/2012-Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! Enjoy time with your loved ones and appreciate every moment you have with them. http://thedomesticbadass.net/2012/12/23/comfort-and-joy/

11/7/2012-I don’t know about you, but I for one, am sooo glad the elections are over! Between people threatening to “un-friend” each other and threatening to leave the country, I’m pretty much over all the childish behavior that “adults” are exhibiting. Come on, folks, let’s grow up and treat each other with kindness and respect.

Hurricane Sandy’s effects are still being felt throughout the Northeast. Now these poor folks are having to deal with the Nor’easter that’s dropping rain, snow and freezing temperatures throughout the area. Please do what you can to help these folks out, whether it’s opening your home to help with a hot meal or a shower, giving to charities that are aiding the victims or sending food and supplies to friends and family to distribute-every little bit helps. To my friends and family up North, stay strong. You guys are in my thoughts and prayers.

In the spirit of what’s been going on, I thought I’d lighten things up with a post about some of my “rescue” missions. Also, I’m going to try to get the mobile soup kitchen going again for the cold weather months. Basically this involves bringing big pots of soup and sandwiches to the areas in Charlotte where the homeless gather and giving them a hot meal. I’d love to be able to hand out blankets, gloves and scarves this year, too. If you’re interested in helping out or donating items, give me a shout at thedomesticbadass@gmail.com .

Still waiting to hear from NFNS auditions. My additional materials are in and now all I can do is wait and hope. I’ll keep you guys posted!

Finally, here’s a shameless plug for the show I designed costumes for. “Judgment at Nuremberg” opens tomorrow night 8pm at The Haid Theatre on the campus of Belmont Abbey College. It runs 11/8-11/10 and 11/15-11/17. It’s a powerful show, chock full of terrific performances. Support the arts and go see some live theatre!

Have a delicious week, everyone! xoxo

10/25/2012-It’s been all sorts of crazy around here lately! To find out the latest adventures and hear all about the first couple of rounds of auditions I went on in my quest to be the Next Food Network Star, check out my latest blog post. I’m also doing the costume design for the play “Judgement at Neuremberg”, opening at Belmont Abbey College on November 8th and we’re getting ready to launch the new Windows Phone 8 OS, so I’ve been busy, but busy is good in my book!

The holidays are just around the corner and that means parties! Why stress out over the food when you can trust your palate to me?!  We offer in-home personal chef and catering for your next event!  To set up a consultation, please email me at thedomesticbadass@gmail.com. I work with you and your budget to come up with the best possible menu at the best possible price.  We also offer planning and decorating services so all you need to do is relax, look good and enjoy!

I’m excited to let you guys know about a friend of mine, Raffeale Marzullo, of Marzullo’s Italian Caffe’ and Catering in Montclair, NJ, is going to share one of his amazing Italian cookie recipes with me and I’m gonna share it with you along with a nice interview with one of the nicest guys I know. If you’re in the Montclair area, drop by and taste what locals have been enjoying for 30 years!  Keep an eye here for when the interview will be posted.

Hope you’ve all been enjoying the gorgeous fall weather!

9/23/2012-Wow, do I suck…It’s been 23 days since I updated this page. In my defense, I’ve been really busy. I was in Seattle for a business trip, working on the cookbook, working on menus for holiday parties, working at the day job, working in the house on a little home improvement project, plus working in the kitchen of course! All work and no play makes the DBA a little sad, so I took a little break with my besties The Frosting Fairies (the aka of my Mom and sis, Jennifer-they make the most amazing cupcakes and baked goods-many of them sugar free!) and hit up the Southern Women’s Show for a day of girl power fun! We had a blast being creative (made bracelets and tye-dyed t-shirts), meeting fellow girl power chef, restauranteur and Next Food Network Contestant, Orchid Paulmeier (aka One Hot Mama in Hilton Head, SC) and getting our crazy on at the annual Firemen’s “Fashion” Show. I have to say, as crazy as we were, there were ladies there going freakin NUTS over these hunky heroes. More on that later…and yes, there is video…

This week, look for a catch up on the goings on of the past few weeks plus a recipe or two. Hope everyone is doing well and if you haven’t checked out our YouTube Channel, here’s the link to the latest video plus all other episodes so you can get caught up. And more are on the way!

The holidays are right around the corner and with them come…Parties! Now you know you don’t want to do all that cooking-you want to relax with a cold drink and have a good time with your friends, right? No worries! The Domestic Badass is on the scene! I can work with you on budget and menu and do all the planning, shopping, cooking and clean up so all you have to do is look good and have fun! For a consultation, email me at thedomesticbadass@gmail.com

Enjoy your the last bits of the weekend and I’ll catch up with you all soon!

xoxo

One Hot Mama, Orchid Paulmeier and me. She is an absolute doll and her food kicks ass!

8/31/2012-Yay! It’s the last day of August! That means fall is right around the corner and with it, apple picking and trips to the NC mountains, pumpkins (not mine-I’ll tell that story soon) falling leaves, falling temperatures and the holiday season. It also means that the summer bugs will be dying off and let me tell you, that cannot happen soon enough. Autumn is my favorite season!

This is the last weekend to enter the Hometown Heroes Contest! To find out more, hit up our Facebook page or check here!

We will be filming the ceviche episode soon so stay tuned!

Have a great Labor Day weekend, all!

8/28/2012-(much later in the day…)-FOOD PORN ALERT! Here is the latest creation from the DBA kitchen…A Thai fish stew with bottle gourd (one of the few things in the garden the damned bugs didn’t get to) topped with a peanut drizzle and a chiffonade of fresh red basil (also from the garden) I’m working on formatting the recipe from my chicken-scratch-esque notes, plus we will be shooting a companion episode as well. I can tell you that this is an uber delicious and inexpensive meal that has tons of layered flavors and is healthy to boot! Stay tuned 🙂 We are also working on the ceviche episode! I don’t wanna give anything away, but it will be packed with great food, great info and of course, some Badass special effects.  In other news, please send good thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by Hurricane Issac, especially my friends, Liz G and Niry A and their families. Stay safe and strong, ladies!

Lastly, if you haven’t checked out the latest DBA episode…what the hell is wrong with you?! Just kidding! Check it out here. Thank you all for following along and for all the positive comments and support! We love you!

8/28/2012-The latest episode of The Domestic Badass is officially on YouTube! Check it out here ! This time, I’m teaching how to make homemade ricotta cheese-don’t be afraid, it’s super easy and really delish! Go on, get your Badass on and give it a shot. We are really proud of this episode, so please check it out and let me know whatcha think! I even have a little “sous chef” that helps me out…nope, I’m not telling. You’re just gonna have to watch the episode.

I love introducing you guys to Badassery in all forms, so please check out my sister from another mother, Kate Elfatah’s amazing designs at House of Minerva. She is so cool, you’ll feel cooler and more Badass by just checking out her site.

For those of you who were with me for the Chopped Challenge last Thursday, recipes are a-coming! Stay tuned…

8/23/2012-Lots going on this week! First, we finished rehearsals for “Spoon River Anthology” and I have to say, the show is really beautiful. Kudos to the cast, Director Simon Donoghue and Tech Director Gary Sivak (aka The G-Man). On a personal note, I’m thrilled that the cast handled all the costume/prop changes I threw at them and they look great! Tonight is opening night and I wish everyone “Break a leg!” If you’re in the greater Charlotte, NC area, you should take a drive to Belmont Abbey and see it-we play today, tomorrow and Saturday and next week Thursday-Saturday, 8pm curtain, all nights. Go experience some live theatre and support the arts! Woo! Since my work with the show is done, (unless of course, someone pops a seam or button…)I figured I’d take tonight and work on some new recipes. After chewing on that idea for a while, I thought it might be fun to do a kind of “Chopped” challenge. You know, the show on Food Network where chefs are given baskets filled with brie, lamb, peanut butter cups and an old shoe and expected to create an elevated gourmet meal? Well, I decided it would be fun to include all of you guys out there in this challenge, so I sent out ingredient requests via Facebook  and Twitter and all sorts of fun suggestions came in. I chose the first four in each category (appetizer, entree and dessert) to create a gourmet meal tonight. No, there is no $10,000 prize on the line (wishful thinking…) but there is a sense of accomplishment for me and new recipes for you. Everybody wins. Here is the list of mandatory ingredients:

Appetizer:

Mahi-Mahi, Plum Wine, Artichokes and Peanut Butter

Entree’:

Salmon, Scallions, Sweet Potato and Peppermints

Dessert:

Cream Cheese, Nutella, Walnuts and Pomegranates

Now, since I live a good distance from any kind of specialty food store and fish market (practically unheard in my neck o’ the woods) I had to make a couple of substitutions…So tonight, the part of The Mahi-Mahi will be played by The Haddock and the part of the Plum Wine will be played by The Sweet Red Wine and Ripe Plum puree. Since pomegranates are not in season (boo hoo!), I am using pomegranate molasses. So although I’m not spot on with ingredients, I’m close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades. I will be posting updates on Facebook and Twitter  so be sure to “Like” or “Follow” (@1domesticbadass on Twitter) so you can get the play by play action as it goes down. I’ll also be posting photos and recipes here asap (I’ll have to format the recipes into something that you can understand as my cooking ‘notes’ are legible only to me…).

I may be gloriously triumphant.

I may go down in flames covered in ground up peppermints and peanut butter.

Either way, it’s gonna be fun! Stay tuned!

xoxo

First Course

Pan Fried Fish Dumplings in Spicy Peanut Sauce

And you thought the peanut butter would throw me…hah!

Entree’

Peppermint and Chipotle Crusted Salmon with Roasted Scallions and Sweet Potato Hash

Yeah, the peppermint sounds weird, but it really works!

Dessert

Dessert Envelopes, stuffed with three different fillings-a sweet cream cheese filling, a baklava filling and a Nutella filling, finished with a honey pomegranate molasses cream.

And now for some sweet dreams…

Well, I have to say, in spite of some craziness of the day, which included an attack by a kamakaze UFI (unidentified flying insect), more garden pests, three unruly dogs, a destroyed kitchen (and the cleanup that had to be done before any cooking started) and a dead mole the size of a New York rat in the yard, the meal was a success! Thanks to everyone who submitted ingredients! Keep an eye out for the next Chopped Challenge as well as the recipes and full scoop on the day’s events.

Well, I’m off to bed-have a good night (uh, morning…)

xoxox

8/19/2012-UPDATE! I have to say, the hubs really “Badassed” it in the kitchen the other night and cooked up a fine meal of pan seared fillet (done to a perfect medium) served on top of Yukon Gold mash and brussel sprout puree, garnished with some crumbled bacon and a red wine reduction.  He even plated! Check it out:

Hmm, maybe I should let him cook more often…

It was so delicious! I am so proud of him and happy to see that he’s learning some culinary skills and not just hanging out in the kitchen so he can be the official taster of DBA HQ.

So yesterday was spent in the theatre, cleaning dressing rooms. All I have to say is that actors are some of the messiest folks I know. Yikes…Suffice to say, that if any of you actor friends of mine are reading this, you are warned. Keep those dressing rooms and your costumes clean and neat, or face the alternative-being naked in a dirty dressing room (ok, that visual is disturbing on a David Lynch sorta level…)

I am working on a new blog post about some of the fabulous places we found a couple of weeks ago on-The Bradford Store in Huntersville, NC, Green Gate Olive Oils in Winston Salem, NC and Savory Spices, also in Huntersville, NC. I love finding local gems and can’t wait to share all about these three very cool places with you guys!

The latest DBA webisode will be premiering this week on our YouTube Channel and right here on the blog. This has been one of our most fun shoots to date, so you don’t want to miss it!

Well, that’s all the news for now-guess I’d better get back to the sewing machine…have a fantastic Sunday! xoxo

8/16/2012-Well, my little Badass has been banished from the kitchen…The G-Man is getting his Badass on, creating a dish he composed in his dream the other night. Not sure what he’s doing in there, but it smells pretty good…I am sooo hungry and sooo proud of him! As an added bonus, I get to work on DBA web stuff and recipe formatting! Yay!

A little good news for you webisode fans out there… We’ve just finished editing the latest DBA webisode and it will be premiering here and on the  DBA YouTube Channel by Monday. I’ll be teaching you how to make fresh ricotta cheese! Don’t be scared-it’s easy, fun and so delish, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start making your own ricotta years ago!
With the new school year starting, I’m also swinging back into Badass Costume Designer mode. I’m working on a page to showcase some of my “mad sewing skillz” both in theatrical costume design and wedding gown design. Stay tuned!

Have a great weekend! xoxo

7/8/2012-Hope everyone had a great 4th of July Holiday! We liberated some cash when our AC capacitor blew on July 3rd. Thankfully, it wasn’t anything super serious (like the entire unit going ka-put…) and we are cool as a cucumber at DBA HQ once again. In more exciting (in a good way) news, the blog site has gotten a facelift! Check it out and read the newest blog post, starring the recipe for my “Ha! I Tofu-led you!” Meatless Meatballs.

Need a quick, easy summer time meal that will keep you cool and fill you up?  Try my veggie and hummus wraps! Just grab some of your favorite veggies and hummus (or better yet, make your own-my recipe is coming soon!) add a little cheese if you like and wrap it all up in a nice soft tortilla. A light and yummy way to beat the heat 🙂  Enjoy the week and stay cool and hydrated!

6/27/12-We are on YouTube! Check out the DBA teaser/trailer here! If you like what you see, please give us a “thumbs up” and feel free to leave comments. If you don’t like it, well, you can always check out another cute cat video…
I’m still working on getting the first Webisode up and hopefully that will happen tonight…
(darn internet connection…) Stay tuned….xoxoxo

6/24/12-Thanks to everyone who came out and got their Badass on with us on Friday night! It was a great night of family, friends, fun and of course, food! Also this week, check out the premiere of a new DBA Webisode (right here on the website) and the premiere of the DBA Promo-Teaser on YouTube!  Enjoy the rest of the weekend and have a delicious start to your week! xoxo

6/16/2012-The newest bit of Food Porn to come out of the Badass Test Kitchen…Freshly made Ravioli stuffed with that homemade ricotta, crispy procuitto and garden-fresh sage and topped with a fresh tomato and basil rosa sauce. Yeah, it was as good as it looked. Recipe to follow soon…
